Briefly
explain the main points of the Nehru Report and why it was vehemently rejected
by Indian Muslims.
Justify
your answer with five valid points.
Answer:
There
were several reasons as to why the Nehru report was rejected.
- India
would be given Dominion status. This means independence within the British
Commonwealth.
- India will
be a federation which shall have a bicameral legislature at the center and
Ministry would be responsible to the legislature.
- Governor
General of India would be the constitutional head of India and will have
the same powers as that of British Crown.
- There will
be no separate electorate.
- The draft
report also defined the citizenship and fundamental rights.
- Equal
rights for men and women as citizens.
- No state
religion.
- The
provinces would be created along linguistic lines.

The infamous Nehru report demanded the
India should be made federation with two chamber parliament.
2.
The Nehru report presented by Moti Lal
Nehru demanded that Hindi should be made the official language of India, this
was an attack of Hindus on the Urdu.

It demanded that there will no rights of
separate electorates for other communities and the minorities, this was also an
attack of Hindus on the political rules of Muslims.

The main reasons why the Nehru report was
rejected was that It demanded for the immediate dominion status this means that
Muslims will live in India for their whole life on the mercy of Hindus. This
was unacceptable for Muslims.

How did the cancellation of the Partition of Bengal
(1911) accelerate the wave of “Muslim Separatism” in British India? Justify
your answer with at least five points. 5 Marks
Answer:
The
Partition of Bengal was the process of separating eastern parts of Bengal from
rest of Bengal. The British Indian government stated the reason of Bengal
partition as a measure to improve the administration efficiency.
The
western region of Bengal comparatively got more focus than that of the eastern
region. British projected the partition process would help the administration
process by
1) Reducing the burden of government of Bengal and form a separate
government for the efficient administration of East Bengal and Assam.
2) Promoting the development of Assam by including it under the
direct jurisdiction of government which was earlier administered by a Chief
Commissioner.
3) Integrating the scattered sections of Orissa under a single
administrative umbrella.
4) The majority of population in the western part of Bengal was Hindu
and the eastern part was mainly dominated by Muslim.
5)
The Muslims were mostly in favor of the partition whereas the Hindu community
opposed the partition of Bengal.

It
received a favorable response from the Muslims. It was thought that it would
bring the emancipation of Muslims socially and economically. The Muslims
welcomed the Partition of Bengal for the following reasons:
1. In the majority province of East
Bengal the Muslims would be free from Hindu dominance in economic field. They
would get opportunities of services and advancement of agriculture.
2. The city of Dacca, where the
Muslims were in majority was the center of Muslim culture. In Dacca Muslims had
a great chance of success for social and cultural advancement than in Calcutta.
3.
The Partition could result in political uplift and securing represent
action in the Government.
4.
The partition of Bengal relieved the Muslims from competing with Hindus,
who were more advanced in every field of life.
